Why Mexico's Lake El Salto Is A Bass Fishing Paradise!

Lake El Salto in Mexico is a bass fishing haven recognised worldwide. The bonus for anglers in this fishing paradise is the size of the fish on offer, in many cases, you'll be throwing back fish considered a good size at most other fishing hotspots!

Lake El Sato provides excellent fishing all year round however, the prime time is usually between September through to about June. One of my favorite smallmouth bass fishing waters are the churning currents of the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna river boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the country, but when the river is on the rise the smallies run for cover, as well as most anglers. Many will lay down their gear until water levels return to normal or head to less favorable fishing holes.

If your the type of fisherman that refuses to do any bass fishing without a boat you might want to find some other smallmouth bass article to read. When water levels go up on the Susquehanna or many other rivers for that matter boating is impossible, unless you are some sort of daredevil with a death wish!

At this time smallmouth bass will seek out easier waters, many times hugging pockets of water near the rivers crest, more times than not they will seek out tributaries along the river and run up them in search of food and calmer waters. One tributary and also one of my secret little hot spots is normally a trickle of water that empties into the river, but when the water levels in the main river go up, its waters push up into this tributary turning it into a deep channel the length of about one mile long. For some reason many bass fishermen overlook areas like this when many times a condition like this will offer up some A+ smallmouth bass fishing, not to mention all the other species of fish that are running up into these calmer waters.What you essentially end up with is a stretch of rivers worth of smallmouth bass clustered up in a rather small channel of water ready to be caught!

So the next time your favorite bass fishing river is on the rise, don't run for cover, break out a map and find some tributaries, drop the bass boat and start fishing some backed up waters.

Perch Fishing Onboard the Edward John on Lake Erie

The Edward John is a 52' vessel built right here in Erie, Pa. The boat is equipped with all the state of the art equipment needed to operate a boat on the Great Lakes. The Edward John can take up to 40 fishermen out on the lake at a time. If you are over 16, you will need a PA. fishing license. The license is available onboard the Edward John.

On the day we were onboard, the Captain was Gary and the First Mate was Todd. We had a great crew for our trip out onto Lake Erie for Perch.

We left the dock in Erie, Pa., near Dobbin's Landing a little after 7 AM and ran east toward North East, Pa.. We ran for about 1 hour and 20 minutes to an area where the perch have been hanging out. We were looking forward to loading up the buckets with two limits of Jumbo Perch. We are having a fish fry at the campground in September and everyone will be donating fish.

I think the perch have an aversion to the frying pan and were all over the lake. I believe this was due to an approaching storm. We did start catching some perch. Others were also catching fish, just not the numbers we were all hoping for. This was my first time out fishing for perch and I had a GREAT time. I even caught a double of two jumbo-sized perch.

The BEST part of the trip was my son Danny catching the largest yellow perch of the day. He won a really nice Edward John t-shirt. Thanks Gary and Todd for a super day fishing Lake Erie. We will be going again before the end of the perch season. Lake Erie is famous for the Walleye and Perch fishing.

If you are coming up to Erie, or for that matter a resident of the area like my son and I, you can't go wrong going out with the Edward John Head Boat. It's super fun and the crew is top-notch. They even have fishing rods you can rent, or you are welcome to bring your own lucky rods and reels. Minnows are FREE and they are the bait that perch enjoy.

Our trip ended somewhat earlier than expected, due to a fast approaching thunderstorm. We did get a little bit wet on the way in, but due to the diligence of the crew, we were off the lake before the lightning and thunder hit. NOW that's what I'm talking about!

Be sure to bring the appropriate clothing for the day along with the cooler for your catch and a camera to remember the day!

Springtime Means A Longer Fishing Rod

I don't know about you, but I'm primarily a river angler. There's nothing I enjoy more than standing in a flowing river and fishing. To me, there's something spiritual about the entire process, and I don't even wave feathers back and forth! Many times the terms 'spiritual' and 'fishing' seem to reserved for flea flickers, which is obviously a complete fallacy, but I digress. As the spring fishing season begins, it means that in many parts of the country, our rivers and streams become high and muddy because of run-off, rain, or a combination of the two. When rivers and streams become high and muddy, fishing becomes much more difficult.

The biggest mistake anglers make with these high water conditions is to try to use the same fishing rod that they use in "normal" water levels. This is a huge mistake and a big reason attempting to fish when the water's high is difficult. If a longer fishing rod is employed when the water is higher, fishing is much less difficult.

A longer fishing rod enables the angler to "feel" both their bait and the bottom much better. As a matter of fact, it makes all the difference in the world. In normal river and stream situations, I use a five foot ultra light fishing rod and reel for my fishing. When the water id high in the springtime, I use a six foot six ultra light rod and reel. That's the only thing that I do differently and it makes all the difference in the world. I still use four pound test line, gang hooks, and live worms. The only difference is that in the springtime I use a longer fishing rod.

This simple tip makes a ton of difference and is so easy. You can even use the same reel that you normally do, just have your longer fishing rod available when the water is higher. And the cost of having an extra rod is minuscule, when compared with the amount of fishing time you gain. So have a springtime fishing rod available, so you don't miss out on this productive time of year. Using a fishing rod that's too short in high water situations will simply result in you feeling so many more less bites that it's not worth fishing with. Having a longer rod available for these high water situations is a great idea.

Ice Fishing Depth Sounder

If you ever need a quick depth sounder when ice-fishing, you can make one with a small bobber and bell sinker. Just attach the sinker to the bottom line retainer of the bobber and the hook or lure to the top retainer. This makes it easy to find the waters depth.

If you are out with a buddy ice fishing and there is a possibility of breaking ice, make sure to stay at least 10 feet apart to spread out your weight. For crappies, use a Swedish Pimple jiggling spoon, Rapala ice fishing plug or live minnows fished on No. 2 to 6 hooks. Crappies can suspend at just about any depth, from a few feet below the ice to just off bottom, in water from five to 20 feet deep. Move often.

Yellow perch use the same baits as for crappies and bluegills. Also try jigging spoons sweetened with the eye from a freshly caught perch or a tiny strip of meat sliced from a perch or bluegill.

Trout shoal areas, the mouths of inlets, and points have produced the most rainbows, browns and brookies through the ice. You can catch them on about every kind of bait or lure you can think of. Wet flies and nymphs with a sp lit-shot crimped a foot above for weight are good, as are minnows, spinners, jigging spoons and ice rapalas.

Pickerel, Pike, Muskies live minnows or dead ones rigged to hang horizontally in the water are the best producers. Tip-ups allow you to spread your baits over a wide area in weedy coves and on points where these predators rove under the frozen lakes surface searching for prey.

Fly Fishing Freestone Rivers

In the first of this series on types of rivers, we examined the pristine spring creek. In this second part of the series we will look at freestone rivers. Freestone rivers make up the majority of the world's free flowing cold water rivers. So named for the rock and gravel that make up their riverbed. As most fly fisher's know rock and gravel are vital to trout, steelhead, salmon and other species that rely on these substances to make their redds during spawning season.

Typically, for fly fishing, freestone rivers are of most importance in the mountainous regions. Where snow melt, glaciers, springs, and rivulets, come together to form a river. Usually a fast flowing, cold, well-oxygenated river. One that has aerobic, active forms of life including insects and the corresponding fish that lives on them. Because of the rock and other debris that line the freestone bed and banks, trout and their insect prey have an array of places to lie. The currents, however help the trout with their turbulence, and whirling nature constantly offer up a plethora of insect life for the choosing.

It is a double edged sword however, as the freestone giveth, the freestone taketh away. No other major river form in this series suffers so much from the forces of nature. Temperatures can be extreme as are water flows. Flash floods can give way to drought conditions in some cases over night. As well as longer cyclical climate forces can enforce their will. Both insect and fish populations can fluctuate wildly.

But what thrives is the heartiest of the hearty. Fish that used to having to survive, indeed it is in their DNA, as well as the flies. Stoneflies, mayfly crawlers and swimmers, and those glorious caddis flies all call freestone rivers home.

When heading out to fly fish a freestone rivers, be ready with a myriad of fishing flies. The infamous patterns that conjure up afternoons spent fighting and releasing feisty hard nosed trout will all be effective in the freestone. Nymphs including the biggest names, Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail, Prince, and dry flies like Adams, Parachute patterns, as well as hair wings, all were made for freestone rivers.

Iin the early season be ready for high, fast and cold water. Wading can be dangerous, but often unnecessary as high waters will bring fish close to the bank, taking advantage of pockets and undercuts, that normally are not there. And, remember that river bottoms can change over the winter, so even a familiar river can have unforeseen wading hazards.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing

One of the most enjoyable fish to catch in the entire world is the Smallmouth Bass. Smallmouth Bass prefer clear cold water. These fish can be found in both lakes and running water. Pound for pound the smallmouth bass is widely considered the most enjoyable fish to catch. The smallmouth bass is a good natural indicator of healthy water. If you find Smallmouth Bass, you more than likely will find healthy water.

Because of their hearty nature smallmouth bass can be found in waters from Maine to Calofornia. The only places that you won't find smallmouth Bass aare area's where it's extremely hot for extended periods of time. They prefer cooler, cleaner water, which means they can be found all over the continent of Canada as well. As mentioned earler, these fish can be found in both lakes and running water.

One of the most enjoyable ways to catch these fish is in river situations. Combining their natural tenacity and fighting ability with moving current can be a lot of fun for anglers of all skill levels. Smallmouth Bass feed on a variety of prey and there are various ways to fish for them. Fishing for them in the same manner that one would for trout is a grewat way to spend an afternoon. Smallmouth Bass tend not to be quite as wary as trout and can be a bit easier to catch. They love live bait of all kinds, but some of the most popular would include: minnows, worms, helgramites, and leeches. Rigging any of these live baits with a set of gang hooks is a very effective method of fishing for Smallmouth Bass.

Any variety of lures can be employed to effectively fish for Smallmouth Bass. Some of these would include: spinners, spoons, minnow initations (such as rapala's), spinner baits, and top water lures. Catching Smallmouth Bass on topwater lures is incredibally enjoyable and quite effective as well.

The bottom line is that in lake situations, smallmouth bass can be fished for in much the same ways largemouth bass are fished for, with minor variuations. And in river situations, smallmoutyh bass can be fished for in much the same way as trrout. Such as bouncing a worm rigged on a set of gang hooks off the bottom, while it flows through the current. There are few experiences that can compare to catching a 4 or 5 pound Smallmouth on ultralight spinning gear in a flowing river. That might very well be the definition of a good time!

Salmon Fishing

General salmon information and fishing tips:



1. Generally, the best times of the day are during the times when there is low light and so too, on cloudy days. On bright and sunny days, salmon will usually collect and assemble deep in the holes.



2. Take note that salmon do not feed while in the river. When they do strike, it is a behavior that is learned. Salmons are known to be predatory and aggressive when in the lake, up until they go into the river.



3. Set the hook by yanking downstream with your rod three times. To get a better set, pulling on the line with your free hand can help. Sometimes, when you lift the rod straight up, it will pull the fly out of the mouth of the salmon.



4. In order for the hook to go through the thick jaws of the salmon, you should always sharpen your hooks.



5. Fishing with a partner can be enjoyable and at the same time help each other to spot a salmon. While one is fishing, the other can be high up on the other side of the bank observing the reaction of the salmon and where exactly they are. Polarized glasses are very helpful when doing this and would bring satisfying results.



6. Finding a good hole where there are many salmon inside and you can fish there for the whole day!



7. Your weight as well as the length of the tippet should be adjusted so that it matches the holes depth and the depth of the fish. Your weight should not drag, but should only touch the bottom every now and then. Note that a tippet that is three feet long will set the fly six inches up to two feet off the bottom.



8. By adding a foam indicator at the top of your fly, you can get your fly higher in the water column.

Chincoteague Virginia Offshore Fishing

The waters off Chincoteague offer a variety of opportunities for offshore fishermen. Spring weather is usually very windy and boats don't often get to fish outside the inlet in the early season. When a calm day presents itself, anglers can catch tautog or sea bass over local shipwrecks and artificial reefs.

By June, monster bluefish arrive and are often present in enormous numbers along the 20 fathom line. This fishing usually amounts to a 25-30 nautical mile trip from the inlet.

Days behind the bluefish are several species of sharks, the most sought after being the mako. Sandbar, tiger, thresher, blue, blacktip, bull, hammerhead and other sharks also begin to appear about this time. Local anglers attract sharks by chumming with ground fish, then using wire leaders baited with whatever bait can be attained. Fresh baits like bluefish, trout, mackerel, bonita, or false albacore are preferred.

By mid-June, tuna often appear off the coast. Bluefin tuna prefer cooler water and usually arrive first. In the early season, bluefin are caught among the vicious bluefish by trolling. By July, many anglers switch tactics and fish for tuna with cut butterfish. About the same time, yellowfin and dolphinfish begin to appear and many anglers troll for them as far out as Washington, Poorman's and Norfolk Canyons. Some of these trips can exceed 70 nautical miles although good fishing is often just 25-30 nautical miles from home.

Late summer usually brings changes to offshore fishing. Better fishing is likely as tuna school up and develop a bigger appetite. Marlin, wahoo and large dolphinfish are also more likely. Another big factor is hurricane season. Some years we enjoy good late season weather and others we wait as systems work off the coast. Patient anglers usually get a few nice days and enjoy good offshore fishing into the fall.

By October, most ocean going anglers turn their attention back to sea bass, flounder and tautog. As the waters cool further, red drum and striped bass or "rockfish" migrate down the coast. By this time offshore fishing has ended and most anglers either retire, or begin fishing inshore for striped bass which goes on throughout the winter months.

Choose The Right Fly Fishing Equipment And Be Successful

When it comes to fly fishing, attitude is half of the battle. You need to be able to switch on to a calm mindset that allows you to keep repeating the same technique without becoming frustrated. You must be able to use the surrounding natural beauty as a means of tempering your impatience. It requires forethought, dedication and commitment.

The other half of fly fishing is the equipment. One wise commentator once noted that whoever said one could not buy happiness had never invested in a new fly fishing rod. Now we may well smile at that and think it a bit far fetched, but, there is no doubt that the proper equipment will go a long way toward creating fly fishing success.

Certainly you need things such as a hat to protect the head from sunburn and the occasionally miscast fly and a pair of good sunglasses can make the difference between a painful squint and wonderful look at a natural vista, but the actual tackle that you use is probably the most important aspect of the equipment portion of the fly fishing equation.

However, if you have ever bought equipment before you will know that making tackle and equipment decisions can be challenging. Consider all of the choices an angler must make.

Is an old-fashioned bamboo rod with its natural flexibility the best choice for a day on the creek, or would you be better served by a new composite graphite rod with a far different, but equally enticing whipping action? When choosing a rod, should the fisher look for a particular brand, or are all models of fly fishing rods created at least close to equal? And what about length? Is there a reason to prefer or pass over that slightly longer model seen at the local sporting goods store? Speaking of flies, this is another area where decisions are critical. Are you going to go for a dry fly strategy, or do you plan to use insect replicas? Is there a color to prefer for the morning as opposed to the evening? Will those trout really even notice the difference between your flies or will any in your collection do the trick as twilight hits? Before you even get that far in the process, you have to decide whether you should learn to tie your own or if you are better off relying upon professionally produced flies for your excursions.

The choice of rod and fly is also going to influence decisions regarding the line you use. The size of the target fish may force you to decide to use a lighter or heavier test line. Some lines float, while others will slowly sink to the bottom. Which lines make the most sense for which kinds of casts, strategies and conditions?

There are those who fish with a stick, a string, a worm and a hook. If they are exceptionally advanced, they may add a bobber to their repertoire before dipping their line and taking a nap under a tree by the side of a slow moving creek or dead still lake. That may be a fine strategy for enticing wobbly out from the muddy banks, but that kind of simplicity does not really work for those choosing to fly fish.

Fly fishing is a more complicated proposition, in terms of both mindset and equipment. Both are essential to success. Tackle decisions can and often will make the difference between a catchless day and hitting the limit.

This is why anyone considering fly fishing must learn how to make the right choices. Even a Zen master of an angler will have a disappointing day if his equipment is not up to the task. All fly fishers must take the time to research the sport, the rods, the reels, the flies, the lines and everything else in order to increase their chance of reeling in an impressive trophy catch.

Getting A Line On Bass Fishing

Bass fishing offers a wide range of ability and challenge for the beginner and the professional. There are several fish in the species line including bluegills, spotted bass, largemouth and rock bass. These are warm water bass. Others such as striped bass, white bass and white perch are a temperate bass. If you are heading out to catch some bass, your first and most important goal is to know where to find them.

Where You Have To Look For Bass

There are several locations that they like to call home. For one, look in your lakes. You can find a wide range of them in shallow lakes in the south. This is where you are likely to find your largemouth bass. Here, look in the weeds and in the reeds. But, you are likely not to find too many here. They enjoy eating algae and plankton which is not readily available in many lakes. Instead, look to the rivers. The water temperatures and the oxygen levels are just right in many rivers for the bass. You'll need to look just outside the current's direct flow. Look on the downstream side of rocks and fallen trees as this is where they enjoy hiding. To catch them, do some bottom and surface fishing.

A great place to find your bass is to look in streams. Here, you will find smallmouth bass in the cooler water of the streams especially just below the rapids. Look in the hiding places such as where erosion has made holes. Look where there are rocks or fallen limbs as well. Look below a dam especially on a hot day. You'll find that they are never in direct current flow. Also, take a look at ponds. These are a source for smaller bass especially near the shore near fallen logs. Of course, look in the reeds. You can fish any of these locations at night for good results too.

Remember that bass are looking for prime conditions and will search them out. They are looking for just the right water temperature and water level. They will seek out locations with good food supply and the right sunlight.

As for bait, you'll want to use a wide range of choices. In still fishing, go with night crawlers, insects and minnows. For bait casting and spinning, use artificial products, trolling with live bait or you can even fly fish for them. For lures, make sure to get at least a five and a half to seven foot rod and your line should be about six to ten pound test. For fly fishing, go with seven to nine feet in rod with a fast taper. You will also need a single action reel that has floating #7 to #9 line with a six to eight pound leader.

If you can, take someone skilled at bass fishing with you your first time out. You are likely to learn a lot. Talk to your local bait shop dealer to learn what bait will work well for your bass. Pick a variety of locations to fish and you'll find success.

Fly Fishing with Egg Fishing Flies

Egg fishing flies are highly effective bait for trout and salmon during the fall when fish are swimming upstream and spawning. In fact, during this time of year, fresh eggs of their own kind make up a large portion of trout or salmon's diet. With so many fish swimming up stream during spawning season and so many nutritious eggs floating downstream, fly fishing with these can make for a bountiful trip.

A look under water:
While trout and salmon lay their eggs upstream in mostly-safe spawning beds, plenty of eggs are jarred loose and lost to the current. These loose eggs float downstream and into the waiting mouths of fish positioned downstream. The fish are naturally attracted to the eggs of their own species, which contain a rich variety essential nutrients and proteins.

The eggs of spawning fish, and consequently egg fishing flies, come in a variety of sizes and colors. Choose yellowish orange for Rainbow Trout, Steelhead, Coho Salmon, and Chinook. Bright orange quarter inch egg flies are better suited for Brown Trout. Be sure to also carry some white or off-white in your tackle box to mirror the color of the many unfertilized eggs that don't take on a color.

Casting:
Since eggs have no movement of their own, they must be cast for dead drifting downstream. Egg fishing flies should be cast far enough upstream from your target that the fly has time to settle on the bottom. Since these fishing flies are bottom drifters, they are prone to catching and sticking on plants and rocks on the river bottom, so be sure to pack lots of extra fishing flies.

The bright color of these fishing flies aid in the detection of a bite when the water is somewhat clear. In murky or deep waters, a strike indicator is necessary to determine a take. When using an indicator, you'll need to watch very carefully and strike just when fish subtly suck in the egg fishing flies.

Tackle and Line:
When fishing with egg flies, just about any standard rod or reel will do. An 8.5 to 9 foot rod and floating line is ideal for most waters while heavier rods can be used when facing big, hard-fighting fish. For maximum effectiveness, it's important for egg fishing flies to sink rapidly. In thick or fast moving waters, applying a little dish soap to the line can help the egg to slide to the bottom quickly.

The ideal time for fishing with egg fishing flies is right around the corner. The months of August through December are when salmon and trout are laying their eggs in the cool waters. So while you may employ your bug fishing fly for the majority of the year, the fall and winter months give you the opportunity to add a new weapon to your arsenal.

There are a few basic steelheading techniques that every steelhead fly fishing angler knows, or should know. Which one you use will depend on several things including water lever, clarity, temperature and speed. Also one must take into account outside temperatures, time of year, and time of day. And finally which fly you are using, which also depends on all of the previously mentioned things and more. But we are here to simplify, to present a few basic techniques to give the fly angler a foundation on which to experiment.

The most popular steelhead fly rodding technique is the wet fly swing. This is used traditionally when steelhead are in fairly shallow water (less than seven feet) and water moving at about walking speed. To begin the technique, you cast upstream from where you are standing, you should be also be standing upstream from the designated target. Once you cast you need to mend your line immediately. And then do nothing else. The mending allows the fly to sink without hindrance. The fly then swings down in front of the desired target. When the swing is done allow the fly to dangle for a few seconds. And be alert, often this is when the strike occurs. Generally I give the same spot a few casts and then move a little and try it again.

Another technique is the dead drift. During this technique it is crucial that the fly drift without tension, and be allowed to drift freely. A strike indicator is mandatory, and a strike indicator that allows you to see whether or not your fly is floating without being impeded is the best. Some fly fisherman use macram yarn, others use a corkie and a toothpick, both indicate whether the fly is floating as it should. Traditional indicators also work. The idea is to keep the fly directly below the indicator, than free floating has been achieved. Dead drifting is used primarily in pools or slower riffles. Dead drifting does not cover as much water as the wet swing, but when fishing in smaller streams, or a narrow concentration of where steelhead are lying it is a very precise and effective method. The indicator can be adjusted to vary the depth at which your fly is presented.

One last popular method is bottom bouncing. Bottom bouncing works well in faster water, when steelhead are lying on the bottom. It is, as the name describes, bouncing your presentation along the bottom. Cast your fly upstream and allow it to sink to the bottom. Generally a couple of split shots BB sized placed twelve to eighteen inches above the fly, will get the fly down. But sometimes more weight is needed. Once the bottom is hit, lift the fly line out of the water by lifting your rod tip up, keep excess line in your free hand. As the fly moves downstream away from you gradually lower the line and let more fly line out.
